I'm Keishawna Gilliam, but most people call me Keke! I'm a natural hairstylist, entrepreneur, licensed minister, writer, dancer, motorcycle rider, and proud youngest of three sisters. I love my family, my faith, and a good laugh—and if I make you chuckle, just know I'm aiming for a knee-slapper!
My love for hair began at seven, braiding my Cabbage Patch doll and learning from my mother, Maybelle, a licensed cosmetologist. As her teenage shampoo assistant, I discovered that a salon chair can be a place for more than beautiful hair. It can be a place to feel heard, encouraged, and seen.
When I experienced hair loss in my twenties, that painful chapter inspired me to create The Esther Elixir, a natural hair-care product born from my own search for answers. Years later, I learned that my grandmother had also made hair-growth products. Without knowing it, I was carrying forward both her legacy and my mother's.
Creativity has always been part of me—from dancing and writing poetry to ministry and riding my unmistakable pink motorcycle. But my biggest leap came in February 2026, when I left a secure 12-year career, my home, church, and close-knit family in Richmond, Virginia, to follow what I believe was God's call to Los Angeles. I was terrified, but faith led where feelings couldn't.
At 43, my life looks different from what I once imagined. Yet I'm learning that different doesn't mean late, and fear doesn't get the final word.
Before every appointment, I pray for what each client needs—not just for their hair, but for their heart. In my chair, there may be snacks, music, laughter, heartfelt conversation, or even a nap. Above all, I ask God for the grace to adjust someone's crown if it's leaning.
A canvas doesn't reveal the finished masterpiece with the first brushstroke--neither does a life. Every person is a blank canvas waiting to be revealed as the masterpiece God created them to be—and it all starts with the crown.
